ITINERARY AND COURSES

This training programme consists of an itinerary of four MOOCs, which will allow you to go deeper into marine ecosystems, understanding their functions and benefits, their major threats, how to conserve them and how we should manage coastal areas. The aim is to provide knowledge on new methodologies, procedures and tools for the conservation and sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems in the context of climate change.

MOOC 1. Innovative methods for assessing marine ecosystem distribution

This MOOC presents a global analysis of different methods applied to the study of marine (mainly coastal) ecosystems. The main objective of the course is for students to learn about the most representative coastal ecosystems, their characteristics, functions and services, as well as the different approaches currently used to analyse their distribution.

MOOC 3. Nature-based solutions (NBS) as a pro-active approach to conservation

This MOOC provides a definition of the term “Nature-based Solutions” (NbS) and offers a broad overview of NbS applied to coastal and marine environments. The main objective of the course is to introduce students to the concept of NbS with real-world marine and coastal examples, explore the intersection between NbS and more traditional conservation practices and concepts, as well as discuss the scientific, socio-economic and political factors that facilitate the adoption of NbS.

MOOC 2. Human activities and vulnerability of marine ecosystems

In this MOOC, you will learn about human needs, the activities developed by society to satisfy them, the consequences for the environment and for society itself and, finally, possible strategies to reduce damage to the environment and improve the benefit to human populations. A methodological approach designed to address these issues, adapted to various marine ecosystems, will also be presented.

MOOC 4. Land-sea-ocean interactions: from coastal management to MSP

This MOOC offers a broad overview of the different methods of coastal management and maritime spatial planning. The main objective of the course is for students to learn about the legal framework that regulates the coast, some of the most representative coastal management tools and practical cases of real application throughout the world.
